FAQ GENERAL
Questions about the history and work of the Kunststoff-Institut Luedenscheid.
The Kunststoff-Institut is not a public or publicly funded institution, but operates as a private limited company and is financed exclusively by service contracts. Where possible, industrial projects are supported with EU, federal or state funds, with the subsidies either being included directly in the project calculation or passed on directly to the participating companies.
The Kunststoff-Institut has 2 shareholders. The majority shareholder (76%) is formed by a Traegergesellschaft e.V. and the other shareholder (24%) by the city of Luedenscheid. More than 400 companies from Germany, Europe and overseas are currently (March 2021) represented in the sponsoring company.
The Kunststoff-Institut was founded in 1988 as the first affiliated institute at a university of applied sciences. A cooperation agreement was signed with the University of Applied Sciences Südwestfalen (located in Iserlohn), which aims at close cooperation between teaching and science and industrial joint research. In addition to the joint use of university facilities, the cooperation is also reflected in joint events, third-party funded projects, student research projects and diploma theses.
In principle, the Kunststoff-Institut cannot award any grants. Due to numerous projects on EU, federal and state level, the institute has contacts to all awarding bodies and can advise on applications or establish appropriate contacts.
The majority of the staff of the Kunststoff-Institut is trained for the field of tooling and process engineering. Thus, especially in case of acute production problems, we try to provide you with on-site support within one day within Germany and within 1.5 days within Europe.
Of course, job advertisements can be placed on our homepage. This is free of charge for member companies.
The order can be placed in several variants in order to process an order as quickly and unbureaucratically as possible. The “normal” procedure is a written or verbal request from the customer. A binding offer is then created and sent by e-mail. The order confirmation is also sent by e-mail. For customers with irregular or very complex inquiries, so-called hourly pools are agreed upon, which make it possible to process orders with the entire range of services of the institute without further order confirmations.
On the initiative of a survey conducted by the SIHK (South Westphalian Chamber of Industry and Commerce) in 1988, a survey showed that numerous companies would like to have a consulting institute. Immediately the institute was founded and has already started its operation in the beginning of 1989.
A group of initially 30 companies from the region around Luedenscheid founded the institute in 1988. The initiators here were the then Iserlohn University of Applied Sciences, the city of Luedenscheid and the SIHK (South Westphalian Chamber of Industry and Commerce).

FAQ JOINT PROJECTS
Questions about joint projects
All project information is stored in the protected area for project participants. If you wish, you will also receive project news by e-mail.
The procedure for patents is handled differently in projects and is agreed with the participants at the beginning. In principle, project participants are always given preferential treatment.
Only in partial areas are project results published or announced after a specified time delay. Again, project participants will always receive preferential treatment.
The experience of our joint projects shows that in numerous projects competitors have worked on the same task and yet company-specific tasks have been completed. Here it is ensured that the secrecy of results of individual participants is given. Results of individual studies are published and discussed within the project group only after approval by the companies.
The greatest advantage of collaborative projects is that the time-consuming and cost-intensive basic investigations can be distributed among several companies, thus keeping the costs for the individual company low. In addition, new business ideas, new business connections or even new business areas arise within the project group.
No. Any publication of in-house know-how or company-specific results will be discussed with you before they are published. Here, however, it is true for all participants that there should be a “give and take” within the project group.
You can determine your deployment within the project yourself. The minimum effort on your part should be attendance at the quarterly or semi-annual project meetings. There are no upper limits to the maximum effort. However, the greater your own commitment, the greater will be your chance for maximum implementation success.
