Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)

Sustainability

Communicating environmental impacts transparently – building trust with a systematic approach

In an increasingly sustainability-oriented economy, it is becoming more and more important for companies to present the environmental impact of their products in a comprehensible, comparable, and credible manner. An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) in accordance with ISO 14025 and EN 15804 offers exactly that: a standardized, verifiable, and transparent environmental declaration based on a well-founded life cycle analysis (LCA).

The Kunststoff-Institut Lüdenscheid supports you from data collection to verifiable documentation – with scientific methodology, state-of-the-art software, and a deep understanding of the requirements of the plastics industry.

Why an EPD?

An EPD is not just an environmental label – it is a strategic communication tool that helps you:

  • Meet sustainability requirements from customers and markets
  • Create transparency and credibility with stakeholders
  • Enable product comparisons based on objective data
  • Identify optimization potential in product development
  • Gain access to public tenders and sustainable supply chains

How to obtain your EPD

Our modeling is carried out using the Umberto 11 eco-efficiency software, which enables complex material and energy flows to be represented graphically. For the life cycle inventory, we use the well-established ecoinvent 3 LCA database—one of the world’s most comprehensive sources of environmental and energy data. This ensures that your EPD is based on reliable, internationally recognized data.

Our standardized questionnaire facilitates the collection of all relevant information for efficient and structured data collection:

  • Material and energy inputs
  • Transport routes and means
  • Production processes and emissions
  • Disposal routes and recycling options

To communicate the results more clearly, we create Sankey diagrams that visually represent material and energy flows as well as environmental impacts according to impact indicators (e.g. greenhouse potential, acidification, resource consumption) and integrate them into verifiable EPD documentation in accordance with ISO 14025 (Type III environmental declaration), which serves as the basis for external verification by an independent third-party auditor such as TÜV Rheinland.

Your benefits at a glance

  • Standard-compliant preparation in accordance with ISO 14025 and EN 15804
  • Data-based modeling with Umberto 11 and ecoinvent 3
  • Efficient data collection through structured questionnaires
  • Visual presentation of complex environmental impacts
  • Verifiable results for external testing agencies
  • Competitive advantage through transparent environmental communication

Sustainable action? Let's talk about it!

Whether as part of your sustainability strategy, to meet customer requirements, or as a prerequisite for tenders, we provide you with expert, efficient, and compliant support throughout the entire EPD process.
